A quick and gentle Private Child Soft Tissue Lumps Ultrasound looks closely at a new or changing lump anywhere on your child’s body, so you can understand what it is and what to do, fast. Our senior specialist sonographers are experienced with children and use safe, radiation-free imaging to measure the lump, see whether it is solid or fluid-filled and check its blood flow. Frequently Asked Questions

Why might my child need a soft tissue lump ultrasound?

It is very common for parents to notice a new lump or bump on their child, be it on the neck, head, arm, leg, back or almost anywhere on the body. A soft tissue lump ultrasound is the right next step if the lump is new, has not gone away after a few weeks, is growing or changing, or is simply causing you worry and you would like a clear answer.

It is also a sensible choice if your GP has felt the lump and suggested a scan, or if you would like an expert look before deciding whether anything further is needed. Ultrasound is a radiation-free way to assess a lump close to the surface of the skin.

What can the scan tell me about my child’s lump?

In a single appointment the scan shows:

  • The exact size and location of the lump and how deep it sits.
  • Whether it is solid or fluid-filled (cystic), one of the most useful early clues.
  • The blood flow within and around it, using Colour Doppler.
  • Its likely cause, such as a lipoma, a cyst, a ganglion, a reactive lymph node or a vascular lesion.

Together these features help your sonographer recognise the common, benign causes of childhood lumps and flag the rare occasions when a further test is sensible. It is a quick, gentle way to turn uncertainty into a clear picture.

How does a soft tissue lumps ultrasound work?

The scan uses safe, painless sound waves to create a live picture of the lump on a screen. There is no radiation, no needles and no injection, which makes ultrasound an ideal first test for children.

A small amount of warm gel is placed on the skin over the lump, and the sonographer gently moves a smooth, hand-held probe across the area. Your child can usually sit on your lap or lie comfortably while this happens. The sonographer also uses Colour Doppler, which shows blood flow in colour on the screen and helps us tell the different types of lumps apart.

Because the scan is completely safe, it can be repeated whenever needed, such as checking whether a lump has changed over time.

What should we expect at the appointment?

The appointment is gentle, quick and child-friendly, with most scans taking around 15 to 20 minutes. You are welcome to stay with your child throughout, and we encourage it.

  • You and your child meet the sonographer, who will explain everything in simple terms and answer any questions before starting.
  • Your child sits on your lap or lies down, warm gel is applied over the lump, and the sonographer moves the probe gently across the area. There are no needles.
  • The sonographer talks you through what they can see on the screen as they go, so you understand the findings in real time.

If your child is nervous, that is completely normal. Bringing a favourite toy, book or device to watch can help them relax, and we are happy to take things at your child’s pace.

How should we prepare for the scan?

Wonderfully, there is no special preparation needed for a soft tissue lump ultrasound. Your child can eat and drink normally beforehand and take any usual medication as normal. There is no need to fast.

It helps to dress your child in loose, comfortable clothing that makes it easy to reach the area being scanned. If the lump is somewhere that is normally covered, a layer that can be lifted or removed easily keeps things quick and comfortable.

Bringing along a comforter, a favourite toy or something to watch can help younger children stay calm and still during the scan.

Is the scan safe for my child?

Yes, ultrasound is extremely safe and completely painless. It uses sound waves rather than radiation, so there is no X-ray exposure and nothing to recover from. It is the same technology used to scan babies during pregnancy, and it can be repeated as often as needed with no known risk.

There are no needles and no injections of any kind, with no side effects to expect afterwards. Once the gel is wiped away, your child can carry on with their day completely as normal. Because it is so safe, ultrasound can be repeated as often as needed without any risk, which is exactly why it is the recommended first test for a child’s lump.

Will we get the results the same day?

You shouldn’t have to wait for important answers about your baby’s health. That’s why, at the Harley Street Ultrasound Group, we give you same-day results.

Your specialist senior sonographer will talk you through what they can see during the scan itself, so you leave the room with an understanding of your child's findings. Your full medical report with tailored advice and any recommended next steps will be ready the same day, along with high-resolution digital images of the scan.

You can view and share both the report and the images securely from any internet-connected device, including your phone, and forward them directly to your GP, health visitor or a paediatric specialist.

What are the most common findings?

The great majority of childhood lumps turn out to be one of a small number of harmless causes. The ones we see most often are:

  • Lipoma, a soft, slow-growing collection of fatty tissue. Completely benign and very common.
  • Sebaceous or epidermoid cyst, a fluid- or keratin-filled sac just under the skin, also harmless.
  • Ganglion, a fluid-filled swelling near a joint or tendon, often on the wrist or hand.
  • Reactive lymph node, a small gland that has swollen in response to a recent cold, infection or minor skin irritation, which usually settles on its own.
  • Haemangioma and other vascular lesions, which are collections of blood vessels that are common in young children and often fade over time.

Your report will explain exactly which of these best fits your child’s lump, in plain language you can act on.

Should I be worried about my child’s lump?

It is completely natural to worry, but the reassuring truth is that the vast majority of lumps in children are harmless and not cancerous. Most are simply lipomas, cysts, ganglions or lymph nodes that have swollen after a minor illness.

An ultrasound is the quickest way to gain peace of mind. In one short, gentle appointment it can confirm the most likely cause, and in the small number of cases where something needs a closer look, it picks that up early so the right next step can be arranged without delay. Either way, you walk away with a clear answer rather than days of wondering.

When is a biopsy or follow-up advised?

Most of the time, the ultrasound gives a clear, reassuring answer and no further test is needed. Occasionally your sonographer may suggest one of two simple next steps:

  • A short follow-up scan: if the lump looks benign but it would be sensible to confirm it is stable or shrinking, we may suggest a repeat ultrasound in a few weeks or months. Because the scan is so safe, this carries no risk.
  • A biopsy or specialist referral: in the small number of cases where a lump has features that need a closer look, your report will recommend onward referral so a sample can be taken or a paediatric specialist can review it.

If a next step is advised, we explain exactly why in plain terms and make sure you leave knowing what happens next. A recommendation for follow-up is about being thorough, and is not in itself a cause for alarm.
