Breast Surgeon

Ms Irene Athanasiou is a Consultant Oncoplastic Breast Surgeon who specialises in the diagnosis and surgical management of both benign and malignant breast conditions.
She works with patients who need expert breast care, combining oncological safety with advanced reconstructive techniques to achieve the best possible clinical outcomes while preserving form, function and confidence.
Based at the Whittington Hospital, Ms Athanasiou also collaborates with specialist teams at University College London Hospital and the Royal Free Hospital. She trained at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, graduating with honours, before completing her specialist surgical training across London and Yorkshire.
Ms Athanasiou is widely recognised for her compassionate, patient-centred approach. She supports women through every stage of their care, from first diagnosis and surgical planning through to recovery and reconstruction.
Working within multidisciplinary teams, she ensures each patient receives evidence-based, personalised treatment tailored to their individual needs and circumstances.
Alongside her clinical practice, Ms Athanasiou is actively involved in national research and clinical trials, supporting the participation of eligible patients to help advance breast cancer treatment and outcomes.
She holds educational and tutor responsibilities at UCL and acts as an educational and clinical supervisor for Foundation Year doctors.
Ms Athanasiou established a dedicated Breast Pain Service in North Central London, reflecting her commitment to service development and improved access to specialist breast care. She consults in English and Greek, and outside of her clinical work she enjoys spending time with her family and has a personal interest in art and music.
