Ostenil is a brand of hyaluronic acid, a substance that occurs naturally in your joints, where it acts as a lubricant and shock absorber. In a healthy knee, hyaluronic acid keeps the joint surfaces gliding smoothly. In osteoarthritis it becomes thinner and less effective, so the joint feels stiff and painful.

An Ostenil injection replaces some of this lost hyaluronic acid, a treatment clinically known as viscosupplementation. It is most often used for knee osteoarthritis, helping to cushion the joint, ease pain and improve movement.

Because Ostenil is not a steroid, it is often suitable for people who want to avoid, or have not had lasting benefit from cortisone, and it can be a useful option for those managing arthritis over the longer term.

Ostenil is most often recommended for people with mild to moderate knee osteoarthritis whose symptoms are not well controlled by exercise, weight management, physiotherapy or painkillers alone. Typical signs include:

• Knee pain that worsens with activity and eases with rest.
• Stiffness, especially first thing in the morning.
• A grinding or clicking sensation when you move the joint.
• Swelling and reduced range of movement.

It can also suit people who prefer a non-steroid option, or who want to delay or avoid surgery. The best way to know if Ostenil is right for you is a consultant assessment with ultrasound. Your suitability depends on the stage of osteoarthritis and the condition of the joint, which your consultant will confirm on the day.

Ultrasound shows the soft tissues, cartilage and joint space in real time and is used to confirm that osteoarthritis is the cause of your symptoms and, just as importantly, to rule out other causes of knee pain such as a meniscal problem, bursitis or inflammatory arthritis, which can feel similar but need different treatment.

Diagnosing the problem accurately first is what makes the treatment precise. Because the same ultrasound is then used to guide the injection, your consultant can place the needle exactly into the target structure, rather than by external approximations.

An Ostenil knee injection works by replenishing the joint’s natural hyaluronic acid to lubricate and cushion the knee, a treatment known as viscosupplementation. The added hyaluronic acid restores some of the smooth gliding action lost in osteoarthritis, helping to reduce friction, ease pain and improve movement.

Because the procedure is performed under real-time ultrasound, your consultant can ensure the injection reaches the exact location and confirm the Ostenil is going precisely to where it is needed. This precision is what makes the treatment both effective and safe, avoiding nearby nerves and blood vessels.

Ostenil is a non-surgical, non-steroid option. Other treatments your consultant may discuss include a steroid (cortisone) injection for a faster anti-inflammatory effect, or PRP, and they will help you choose the approach best suited to your knee.

Most patients find an Ostenil knee injection far more comfortable than expected. Local anaesthetic can be used, so you typically feel a small sting as the needle goes in, followed by a brief sensation of pressure as the hyaluronic acid is delivered. This is normal and settles quickly.

The appointment usually takes around 20–30 minutes from assessment to completion:

• Your consultant scans the knee to confirm the diagnosis.
• The skin is cleaned and prepared.
• The injection is delivered under live ultrasound guidance.
• You rest briefly and are given aftercare guidance before you leave.

There is no general anaesthetic and no overnight stay. You can usually drive yourself home, though arranging a lift is sensible if your knee feels sore afterwards.

Your injection is performed by a consultant specialist doctor, not a physiotherapist, nurse or GP. This matters, as the majority of MSK injections in the UK are delivered by non-consultant practitioners, often without ultrasound image guidance.

This is a deliberate commitment to clinical integrity. Some providers treat every appointment as a guaranteed procedure; we don’t. You can book knowing that you will receive a genuine specialist assessment first, and that treatment only proceeds when a senior clinician believes it is genuinely warranted.

If an injection isn’t appropriate, your consultant will explain why and set out the alternatives. This may include physiotherapy, a different injection, such as PRP, or onward referral, meaning you still leave with a clear plan.

Ostenil tends to work more gradually than a steroid. Many patients notice improved comfort and movement over the first few weeks, as the hyaluronic acid restores lubrication within the joint, with the benefit building over the following weeks.

Relief from a course of Ostenil commonly lasts around six to twelve months, though this varies with the severity of osteoarthritis and individual factors. Ostenil is sometimes given as a course of injections spaced a week apart, or as a single dose depending on the product and your consultant’s recommendation. Treatment can usually be repeated when symptoms return.

Your consultant will give you a realistic picture based on your own assessment, including whether a single injection or a short course is likely to serve you best.

There is no significant downtime. You can return to everyday activities the same day, though it is sensible to avoid strenuous exercise, heavy lifting or high-impact activity for 24–48 hours. Some mild soreness or a feeling of fullness in the knee for a day or two is normal.

Gentle, regular movement helps the joint settle and supports the benefit of the injection. Your consultant may recommend specific exercises, and many patients benefit from continuing physiotherapy or a tailored exercise programme alongside the treatment.

Both can help knee osteoarthritis, but they work differently. A steroid (cortisone) injection reduces inflammation quickly and is often the best choice for a painful flare-up, though its effect can be relatively short-lived. Ostenil (hyaluronic acid) works more gradually by lubricating and cushioning the joint, and tends to provide longer-lasting relief, often several months, without the use of a steroid.

Ostenil is frequently preferred for people who want to avoid repeated steroids, who have ongoing osteoarthritis rather than a single flare, or who have not had lasting benefit from cortisone. Some patients use the two at different stages.
