Frequently Asked Questions

What happens during a Complete Breast Assessment?

Understanding your risk and committing to a proactive breast care routine is critical to your long-term health and wellness.

Our complete breast assessment is a great place to start if you are looking for trusted advice on the next steps in your healthcare journey or want general information about breast health management.

One of our leading breast experts will take a detailed clinical history review before:

  • Assessing your risk factors

  • Performing a physical examination of your breasts and armpits

  • An Ultrasound to screen for abnormalities. If you are under 40, an ultrasound can identify abnormalities even if you don’t have symptoms. Ultrasound is the preferred imaging tool for women under 40 as it doesn’t use radiation. Ultrasound is also a supplementary screening tool for mammograms for women over 40 with dense breasts that make lumps more difficult to identify.

  • Providing next-step advice

If you have any questions throughout your appointment, please feel free to ask.

Our top priority is your health, and we strive to create a warm and welcoming environment where you feel heard.

What symptoms should I look out for?

Regardless of your age, it’s crucial you become familiar with the look and feel of your breasts.

That way, if you experience a sudden or gradual change, you can visit a trusted breast consultant as soon as possible.

In general, you should look out for the following symptoms and changes:

  • A lump or lumpiness

  • Thickening of your breast tissue

  • Changes in the skin of your breast, such as a rash, discolouration, dimpling, or puckering

  • Ongoing and unusual breast pain or discomfort

  • Changes in the size or shape of your breast

  • Changes to your nipple’s size or colour, a nipple rash, or nipple discharge

  • Changes to your breast implants

If you are unsure, err on the side of caution. Seek private breast care advice if you experience any of the above or some other change to your breasts or chest area.

Your doctor can answer your questions and provide personalised guidance.

What does a breast lump feel like?

A lump in your breast is one of the most common signs of breast cancer.

However, these lumps can vary significantly from person to person. It might be large or small and painless or painful.

It might be underneath the skin of your breast or closer to your armpit.

It doesn’t matter how it feels; if you notice a lump in your breast, visit our breast clinic.

Our private breast consultation service can give you the answers you need to rest easy.

When should I visit a private breast clinic?

Breast screening is an important part of any person’s healthcare routine.

While most breast changes are not caused by cancer, early detection of breast cancer empowers you to seek treatment quickly and improves the likelihood of survival.

That being said, you should visit a breast clinic as soon as you notice a change in your breast – whether you are 25 or 75.

You should also schedule regular breast screening, as some people who are diagnosed with breast cancer do not have signs or symptoms of the disease.

If you are aged 50 to 71, you should have your breasts checked every three years. If you have a significant family history of breast cancer or are concerned you have an elevated risk of developing the disease, schedule an appointment with one of our specialist breast consultants for tailored advice. You may require additional screenings.

How do I prepare for my Complete Breast Assessment?

A Complete Breast Assessment are relatively quick and fuss-free – there is no need to make any special preparations, and you can return to your regular day-to-day activities immediately following your appointment.

Your doctor will ask you to undress from the waist up, so you might like to wear clothing that is easy to take on and off. You will be given privacy to remove your clothes and to put them back on afterwards.

You might also want to take off any long necklaces that could get in the way of the examination.

What does breast screening look for?

Examinations of your breasts and armpit area look for more than breast cancer. The screening process will also help identify the following:

  • Breast infections and abscesses

  • Benign (non-cancerous) lumps, such as fibroadenomas

  • Ductal Carcinoma in Situ (DCIS)

  • Breast implant issues, such as implant rupture

  • Breast and skin cysts

  • Swollen lymph nodes, which may signify cancer, infection, or inflammation

Can men get breast cancer?

Yes. All people can get breast cancer, regardless of gender. Just under 400 men are diagnosed with breast cancer in the UK each year.

If you are a man and notice a change in your breast tissue, make an appointment. Our compassionate, highly qualified healthcare professionals can assess your symptoms, perform a non-invasive exam, and give you the answers you deserve.

What happens during a physical breast exam?

If you have never had a physical breast exam, it’s only natural to feel a little nervous. Your comfort is our priority, and we strive to make your experience a positive one.

A physical breast examination helps doctors identify abnormalities in the breast tissue. Breast tissue covers a large area stretching from the middle of your chest up toward your collarbone and out to your armpit.

First, you will be asked to lie down. Then, your doctor will examine your breast tissue using their hands. They may apply some pressure with their fingers to ensure lumps in the deeper tissue are not missed.

Your doctor will also examine the lymph nodes under your arm and above and below your collarbone.

The examination should not be uncomfortable – unless you have a painful lump. Let your doctor know if you experience any pain.

If a lump or abnormality is discovered, your doctor will take note of its size, texture, and shape. They will then talk you through follow-up examinations and diagnostic measures to determine the nature of the lump.

What Our Patients Say About Their Experience

We are committed to providing a high standard of care to our patients. Take a look at some of the incredible responses we have received.

Very efficient and reliable staff, from nurses to doctors. Punctual and professional

The moment I arrived on the 3rd floor, Madiha introduced herself to myself and my daughters. We were taken to the consultation suite. I was informed of what to expect and got myself ready. Dr Ahmed Shah entered and introduced himself. Every step of the ultrasound was explained and the images on the screen in details which was so good. The whole process was 1st class and I was made to feel.so at ease from start to finish. It was great to get the result that 'nothing sinister was going on' and to get the report and scans the same day is fantastic. Thank you so much.

I found it very easy to book online as all I needed to know was on your the pages of your website. And got an appointment to suit me, speedily. Easy to get to. Didn't have to wait upon arrival, was shown into the Ultrasound scanning room, and procedure explained. The Radiologist gave me a running commentary as she examined me, quite thoroughly. And at the end asked if I had any questions, gave whatever advice she could impart, and advised the next steps I could take. My report confirmed her findings, with screenshots of the pictures she had taken. Thank you

I was shown up to the third floor (glad there was a lift ) . Where I was greeted by a member of the breast team . (Olga) .who I found very professional and polite. The whole procedure was explained. Though I was very anxious, I was made to feel at ease. Dr . Sbano carried out the ultra sound . And again I was made to feel at ease and every thing was explained step by step. I would like to thank the complete team for their help as I also needed help afterwards with the down load of documents. Regards, Trevor

This is my second year coming for a breast ultrasound. Both years I got different doctors and I have had a consistently amazing experience. Both consultants were extremely professional, friendly and explained everything in detail, as well as answered all of my questions. I couldn't fault the service at all. I've been made to feel very comfortable each time and I will continue to return yearly. Thank you for a lovely service and such great consultants! Highly recommend!

We were seen by Dr Trevor Gaunt who was amazing. We have visited twice and he is so honest and doesn't just take your money! He was really patient and sweet with our 2 year old.
